A Grain Contract that Releases You from Verified Crop Failure? We’ve Got That!

Sep 05, 2025

By Nathan Flores and Ashley Hoffman, Grain Origination Team

It’s that time of year again when we will launch our winter wheat contract, Alpine Pro. This contract specifically prices July 2026 (new crop) wheat futures. It offers excellent and unique pricing options, while helping to alleviate some of the stress associated with contracting a summer crop. For instance, if you were to experience hail, freeze damage, or another unforeseen weather event, you can be released from your bushel obligation after verifying a crop failure with insurance.

During the trading period, from October 1st until April 30th, our team at GCC will determine the futures price using a combination of committee pricing methods. At the close of the pricing window on April 30th, bushels enrolled in our 2025 Alpine Pro contract were set at a futures price of $5.95. New crop contracts priced at market value on the same day were set at $5.29. The contract will incur a 10-cent fee, and you are responsible for setting basis on or before May 29th.

This contract allows for bushels to be enrolled in 1,000 bu increments, or a volume that you’re comfortable with. However, it is not recommended to contract more than 30% of your average production. We believe this contract could be a valuable component in your marketing program!

Alpine Pro is just one tool that we are excited to offer to add diversification and value to your grain marketing portfolio. Enrollment will end on September 26th – contact a member of the Grain Team today to sign up your bushels and see if this contract is a fit for your operation!
